How to fix a mistake in your Mecklenburg property record

Updated Oct 26, 2026

The county values your home from its record of it: heated square feet, bedrooms, bathrooms, quality grade, story height, year built and lot. If that record says 2,400 square feet and you have 2,050, or three full baths when you have two, your value is probably too high. The county's own example of an error to correct is a home listed with three baths that actually has two.

A wrong record is the easiest problem to fix, and the best time is before 2027 values are finalized. The county is asking owners to submit corrections during its 2026 review.

1. Check what the county has

Look up your address here to see the key characteristics, or open your full property record card on the county's property search.

2. The usual suspects

FieldCommon problems
Heated areaUnheated space counted: garages, porches, sunrooms, unfinished bonus rooms or basements. Additions measured twice.
BathroomsA half bath recorded as full; a removed bath still listed.
BedroomsAn office or bonus room counted as a bedroom.
Quality gradeBuilder-grade finishes graded "Good" or higher.
Year built / effective yearAn effective year that assumes renovations that never happened.
LotAcreage that includes a sold-off strip, or misses an easement or floodplain.

3. Gather proof

4. Ask the Assessor's Office to correct it

Contact the Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office at 704-336-7600 or AssessorQuestions@MeckNC.gov. Give them your parcel ID (it's on every property page here), what's wrong, what's right, and attach your proof. Keep a copy of everything you send, and note the date.

The county doesn't publish a dedicated online correction form. Call first to confirm the current channel.

Already have your 2027 notice?

You can still raise a factual error in informal review (within 30 days of the notice date) or in a formal appeal to the Board of Equalization and Review, which has a duty to correct errors in property descriptions. See how to appeal.

Questions

How do I correct the square footage on my Mecklenburg property record?
Contact the Assessor's Office (704-336-7600 or AssessorQuestions@MeckNC.gov) with your parcel ID, the correct figure, and proof: a recent appraisal, plans, or a measured sketch.
Should I fix my record before or after I get my 2027 notice?
Before, if you can. The county is asking owners to submit corrections while it finishes its review, so the fix can make it into your 2027 value. Once notices are out, an error can also be raised in informal review or a formal appeal.
